Remembering QUSDAS friends and some thoughts since 1970 or thereabouts.

When I started study (BSc) at the University of Queensland in 1967 I greatly appreciated the friendship and spiritual nurture of people like David Mee Lee, Geoff Catton, Winston Craig, Max Brinsmead, Nonie and Chip Hedges and subsequently a host of other good friends like Marcia Corrigan, Ken Aitken, Wendell Rosevear, Tony Truscott and Jim McNeill. I have very fond memories of QUSDAS camps and University conventions and still remember great laughs in doing skits with Max Brinsmead. I wish you all well (and there are many more friends I could mention) this weekend and regret I cannot be up there with you all. Here is a small life sketch since QUSDAS days.

In 1971 I started work as a high school science and mathematics teacher in Kingaroy and in 1975 gained a Commonwealth Postgraduate Award to return to University to study for a PhD in physical chemistry from which I graduated in 1978, 30 years ago now. I married Marian Hartley who worked at the South Queensland Conference office at the time, in 1976. We have two daughters: Deanne who works as an assistant accountant in the treasury of the South Pacific Division Office in Wahroonga Sydney, and Sharlene who is married to Ryan Hayton (USA) and lives in Detroit Michigan. Ryan is doing his surgery residency at St. John Hospital in Detroit.

Last September Sharlene and Ryan blessed us with a grandson (our first grand child). We have lived in Brisbane (1975-1979), Toowoomba (1979-1984), Darwin (1984-1988), York England (1988), Cooranbong since 1988 with a 6-month stint on sabbatical leave at Purdue University in 2004. Since my 9 years of high school teaching I have been involved in tertiary education, particularly in chemistry. I have been on the lecturing staff at Avondale College since 1988 and thoroughly enjoy the experience and the opportunity this gives to work with other academics overseas from time to time. Marian works in the Ellen White research centre at the college.

Avondale College was my first introduction to denominational work and I cannot think of a better place to have commenced such work. I thoroughly enjoy the opportunities for dialogue with our friends from the theology faculty and other faculties across the college. I have found it to be absolutely necessary to maintain contact with professional colleagues in other institutions and from other faith positions to keep some sort of balance in one’s life.

Like many of you I am sure I found the early 1980’s very disturbing but have managed to work my way through some of the issues. Arthur Patrick has given many keen insights into this period and has been so helpful to many of us working through these issues. Fritz Guy and his book, 'Thinking Theologically', have been a great blessing as well. I have found an increasing openness of the church to wrestle with new ideas although I think we still have a long way to go in the science-religion issues of the day. I am involved still in taking Sabbath school lessons at college and do preaching from time to time.

By the way, if any of you know of people who might be interested in lecturing/researching in biological /organic chemistry or mathematics lecturing/researching at Avondale please let me know. We have vacancies in these areas. I am so keen to know what all of you have been doing since the 1970’s. Please let us know of your journey. I am sending some photographs (past and recent). Life Sketch for QUSDAS Reunion

I was a QUSDAS member from 1965 to 1970 whilst I was studying Medicine at the University of Queensland. I lived in The Shack on Moggill Rd, The Gap, the country estate of the late Cyril Evans and family with Clyde Rock, Wes Allen , Austin Grillmeier and a number of other QUSDAS fellows.

In 1970 I married Pamela Chung Lun whom I met at a Sydney Convention at Crosslands in 1967. The relationship was cemented at C67, the convention we ran at Maranatha in 1967. Austin Grillmeier was our best man and Marjorie Lane (Mee Lee) the matron of honour at our wedding in the Tweed Heads Adventist Church.

Pam and I lived in Brisbane from 1971 to 1974 where our eldest son Thomas was born in 1973. Pam worked at the Institute of Child Guidance at Spring Hill until she became a mother. I completed my training in obstetrics and gynaecology at the Royal Womens Hospital, Herston.

In 1975 we moved to Auckland, New Zealand where our eldest daughter Kim was born. I obtained a PhD in my chosen field of fetal endocrinology. We met up with Gary Martin in Lake Taupo where he was living, practising and skiing.

In 1978 we returned to Brisbane where I worked in the Department of Physiology at the University of Queensland and at the Royal Womens Hospital. We lived at Kenmore, Bellbowrie and Taringa and attended the Central Church where important friendships were made with Peter and Mel Lambert and Len and Beth Mayfields. Two more children were added to our family, Peter in 1979 and Felicity in 1980.

In 1981 we moved to Newcastle, NSW where I was Lecturer in the newly established medical school. We attended the Charlestown church for a while in Newcastle but gradually drifted away. I established a working relationship with another Adventist obstetrician and gynaecologist, Steve Raymond and, in 1990, we both left the university and began a private practice in rooms that we built together at Lambton. I was simultaneously the Director of Obstetrics at the John Hunter Hospital.

We spent 19 years in Newcastle but, as soon as our youngest daughter finished her secondary schooling, Pam and I sold the family home from under their feet, moved out and went to England for 12 months. Pam and I had a wonderful time in Sheffield where I worked at a local IVF Clinic. We developed our love of walking in the Peak District.

In 2000 I returned to a private practice in Coffs Harbour where we still have our primary place of residence. Pam and I worked hard at that for 6 years but we gave up that practice also in August 2006. Since then I have been working part time as a locum at hospitals throughout NSW and as a volunteer in Mt Hagan, New Guinea. In August 2007 we returned to Sheffield, England where we have spent another memorable 12 months, working a little (on the Isle of Man) but mostly just travelling and walking and enjoying England, Ireland, France, Germany, Austria etc. A sample of our recent lives can be found at http://www.brinsmead.net.au/14.html.

Our eldest three children are married. Thomas has a PhD in Electrical Engineering and Mathematics. He is an environmental strategist with the CSIRO in Newcastle, Kim has a degree in Radiography and works as an ultrasonographer in Sydney, Peter has a degree in Arts but chooses to work in a Mom & Pop-type supermarket in Deloraine, Tasmania while Felicity is a graphic artist who has just returned to Sydney after traveling in the UK and Ireland for a couple of years. We have one adopted grandchild, Jesse, who lives with his parents in Deloraine.

In 2009 I am looking forward to working on our 6-acre citrus farm in Nimbin NSW and maybe doing a little more work in my specialty of obstetrics and gynaecology in Papua New Guinea, Newcastle or New Zealand. We shall continue to travel as much as we can.

Personal History of Ken Aitken ....

I finished a Science degree (in biological science) at the University of Queensland in 1974. The Federal Government provided free university fees in that era compared to the Hex fee arrangements which are part of the Federal Government's policy now. I married Harriet (nee Kent) from Melbourne who I met and got to know at the Australia wide National SDA University Camp at Raymond Island in the Gippsland Lakes area of Victoria ( see photograph above). We were married in Melbourne in December 1975. We have been married happily for thirty three years in 2008.

For twenty years, I ran a small Landscape Design and Construction Company called New Earth Systems P/L doing very creative, individual designer gardens for wealthy residential clients around Brisbane. I was an artistic person, a lateral thinker ..... more artist than businessman. I thought of a landscape as a three-dimensional piece of space that people walked through. This space changed with time as it grew and changed with the time of day: shadows vs. sun patterns, boulders, colour, plants, trees, earth-forms, solid structures and water. These were the ingredients in a subtle flow of landscape design and construction. Rather an intangible product to sell and run a business with!! I wanted to be successful in making money but the creative side and the financial success of the business were in constant tension. With the landscape business I was in, there was enormous amount of work in spring and summer time. In winter time however, there always had a severe downturn. My creativity in my business couldn’t be standardised vs. a successful business needs to be like a biscuit cutter …. Making a few $$ off large numbers of components.

I was more an ideas, admin and marketing sort of person, good at the design side but not so good at the practical implementation side of the business. Because of the fluid nature of a garden, it was very difficult to be involved in just design, without having to get fully involved in the production side. I photographed and put this blog site together in 2008 ..... 28 years on. To this day I still remember helping to supervise all the earth works levels, placing every boulder and designing, selecting and placing every plant on the site over a three months period. In 1995, I had very little work and money was very short as a result. It was the worst year for business I have been through in twenty odd years. I felt under incredible stress and my wife Harriet and two teenage children were really feeling the pressure as well.

I was under such extreme pressure from the lack of work and at a point of desperation. I was ready to give it all away. I didn’t know which way to turn as I had invested years of study and resources into my chosen career and now it seemed fruitless. I had finished a B.Sc. at University of Queensland in the 1970’s and had completed most of a Graduate Diploma in Landscape Architecture at QUT in the late 1980’s. I found it is impossible to have business and exam deadlines running together and on one very important project, I had let an important exam assignment pass by.

The business changed overnight when I had a simple accident which resulted in severe consequences. I had a severe brain injury. I now have an insurance Income Protection Policy for life which is CPI indexed. In many ways this accident and its consequences, has been one the best thing that has happened to myself and the family, even though it has been a difficult experience. I have now been provided with an income much better than a Government Pension. I think there is irony and humour in this. I had worked hard all my life for very little, whereas now I don’t have to work at all if I don’t want to. It is quite adequate for our needs. I find that twelve years on from my accident, I am in a new season of life. We own our house as well, so do not have mortgage payments to make every month. In the midst of this, Harriet can work as well. I am now an internal Life Gardener to hundreds of people around the world by e-mail.

I went through a real transformation of life whereby I went from being:

1. Outer Sustainability: In a gardening and agriculture sense ..... can certain practices be maintained….. is what you doing now preparing the way ahead for new garden which will growing successfully in twenty years time. It was a very difficult business in which to make money, mainly due to the very non-standard and the seasonal nature of the work. My former life was not sustainable ….. my creativity in my business couldn’t be standardised vs. a successful business needs to be like a biscuit cutter …. Making a few $$ off large numbers of components.

Since my accident, I have really discovered people in a big way. I have come to value people, no matter who they are, what they do or say. I have developed a passion to build inner community with many people around the world especially by e-mail. As I am on a permanently paid holiday through my life-long Income Protection, I have time to spend with people in a way I never could do in my busy business.

2. Inner Sustainability: In an ongoing personal sense …. Can your life be maintained? ….. is what you doing now preparing the way ahead for new life? I have also discovered the significance of the Inner and Outer Life. Sustainability I have come to see, has to be a wholistic view on life of Inner, Middle and Outer Persons. Problems come because things do not change from the Outside to Inside but from the Inside to the Outside.

Changes with My Accident:

One of the major changes is that l have had a major loss of driving ability as I cannot intuitively take all the information still at the moment. I now have a chauffeur .... my wife Harriet to drive me around or I go by public transport. In addition to this, I have learnt to travel on the Internet. ….. I can go around the world and back again to my office in a few minutes all for $25.00 / month and see hundreds of people along the way …... more than I ever could before trying to drive or fly there!! I have been working to tell something of my personal history. I grew up in the 1950's and 1960's at Wilsons Creek, up in the mountains out from Mullumbimby in Northern New South Wales. I was raised on a banana plantation amidst the steep slopes of rainforest and wet sclerophyll (gum) forest and occasional cliff outcrops. The creek we swam in was a very clear, clean freshwater rainforest creek with big deep pools. People now in the City, would give their `eye' teeth for it as my late father used to say.

Wilson's Creek is about twenty minutes (about ten kilometres) up in one of the many valleys west of Mullumbimby, in the Northern Rivers area. With this time, came for me a strong spiritual love of Creation, Nature, Country Living and the Environment. Our house at Chambers Flat Rd. is inspired by this time of growing up. We had a strong relational overlap as we were in the Mullumbimby Pathfinder Club. PERSONAL HISTORY OF RON LAWSON ....

1) For several years from 19591 onwards a group of us was invited to a much-appreciated meal at the home of Mrs. Anderson on St. Lucia Rd. Those in this photo suggest it was taken about 1961 or 1962. Left to right they are: Charles Hammond, Ian Clarkson, Mrs. Gertrude Cyrenia Anderson, Ron Lawson, Jeannie MacDougal, Malcolm Johnston, Fred Mazzaferri, Jack Holliday.

2) In 1964, in our third year of operation, QUSDAS hosted a national convention of all Australian university societies. This is a photo of the QUSDAS members who were present on the day that it was taken. (I need some help from others to restore memories of a few names.) Far too many are hidden, which is sad.

QUEENSLAND UNIVERSITY 1960s - 2007 ...

I was out the university in April 2007 and took these photos. The dry grass in the central Grand Court is a result of the drought in the last ten years. Brisbane was on Level 5 water restrictions with no houses, commercial or institutional centers being watered. That has all changed now with immense amount of rain over South East Queensland at Christmas time.

I was out visiting my son Anthony in July 2008. Anthony is studying at the University. I took some photos of the surroundings, gardens and lakes which are on the Campus now compared to the 1960's and 1970's.

The Book: 'The Mayne Inheritance' by Rosamond Sieman

.... It is about the Mayne family story, and the end result was that James Mayne donated a lot of money to Qld University so that they could buy the land at St Lucia. The Mayne Hall at the Uni is named after this family. The book contains a fascinating story ( I won't tell you why it is fascinating), a lot of the very early history of Brisbane. The big home this family lived in is now the Wesley Hospital.
It is a must read for all people who have ever attended the Qld Uni. May be some one could read the book and give a review of the book. I would be happy to do that but I don't have a copy of the book. I borrowed it.

Dear Fellow Colleague

A Reunion is being planned for those associated with the organisation known as QUSDAS (Queensland University Seventh-day Adventist Society). It is being viewed as an inclusive event for anyone who had this common church and tertiary student or staff affiliation during the 1960s and 70s. Those who had a close association with this group are also invited. We hope it will provide an opportunity to renew contact and friendships. All, no matter what is their current creed, belief or non belief, are welcome. It is not an SDA church or a University sponsored event. It is for anyone who would enjoy themselves by coming

Max Brinsmead came up with the idea and found a few of us who were also keen. We see it as providing an opportunity to

· Share journeys, life paths and experiences

· Review the history of QUSDAS

· Hear from significant persons who contributed and advised the society in its early days

· View memorabilia and share music.

The planning committee is calling for people interested in giving a talk to send us the topic or an abstract by early June, with some indication as to how long they wish to talk for. Submissions will be considered and a program developed e.g. several short presentations with a common theme or focus followed by group discussion. The Planning Committee will then select papers and or topics with the most general appeal. Max Brinsmead is the contact person for submissions at demwb@midcoast.com.au. A further call for papers will be made in the near future. This is a first notification to stimulate thought!

We are planning to arrive at Maranatha camp, Wappa Falls Rd via Yandina on Friday afternoon 22^nd August and have three full days - Saturday and Sunday with Monday at the Sunshine Coast. We had the idea of talks and group discussion plus informal time together. Attendees may stay on in Brisbane after the weekend for further socializing and discussion. Wendell Rosevear has offered his home at St Lucia for an after reunion event.

It has been suggested that we use a blog website to put any material up beforehand so that we can get some idea of where people are, who might be coming and what we might expect before the event.

There are instructions on the website as to how to use it. If you are confident and experienced with the Internet you can start up your own post with text and or photos. It can include hyperlinks to a pre-existing website. The suggested text is about your journey from the QUSDAS days until the present time. Alternatively, you can send your text and photos to Ken at aitkken@gmail.com who can post them for you. If you don’t have an e-mail facility then you can send photos and text to Ken at 1606 Chambers Flat Road, Chambers Flat Q 4133.

Areas that will need to be organized are: program, music, menu, entertainment, attendee list and registration, finances and house keeping. If any are interested in getting involved beforehand, please contact us and we will put you in touch with others also interested in the same area.

Personal History of Gay Grillmeier .....

My name is Gay Grillmeier. I am a sister of Nonie Hodgson and Chip Hedges and Joy Dove. I attended Queensland Teachers Training College from 1959 to 1960, and taught Home Economics at Cavendish Road High School from 1960 to 1963.

I married John Grillmeier (brother of Austin) in 1963, moved to Cooranbong and lectured at Avondale College till 1966.

We then lived in a variety of places in NSW, including Picton, Murwillumbah, Menindee and Inverell. Four wonderful children were born during this time.

In 1988 we moved back to Cooranbong where I lectured at Avondale College till 2005. I loved every moment of my teaching time there and miss the staff and students, now that I am retired.

John and I were divorced in 1995, and I have enjoyed being 'a woman of independent means' during the past 12 years. I have had the privilege of visiting Italy, USA, Antarctica, Nepal, Peru and Africa.

Am looking forward to meeting up with friends from the past and staying a few days at Maranatha.

Warren & Esther Lane’s Life Story

We have had a very wonderful life. We met at a Youth Camp, enjoyed QUSDAS together, before having four daughters who have since introduced us to four great sons-in-law and fourteen grandchildren who are all one could desire.

Warren: In 1957 I joined the Queensland Government as a cadet Draftsman, and graduated as dux with Civil Engineering in 1964. I was then responsible for groundwater investigation and licensing in parts of Queensland. In 1983 I was appointed Farm Water Supplies Engineer, later I was involved in surface water hydrology and flood studies. In 1986 I was appointed Queensland Manager of Forward Planning investigating sites for future dams, and water supply schemes for urban water supplies, irrigation, power stations, and mining projects. designing farm dams and irrigation systems.

Esther: I taught for 41 years in all areas from pre-school to university, arranged recognition of my Avondale qualifications for the University Queensland, worked outback on mini-schools, and was one of the 21 teachers selected to establish the Queensland State Pre-school I learned a lot from the handicapped in Endeavour and TAFE. Work with the immigrants & refugees at TAFE gave system. Tremendous satisfaction. I also spent seven years teaching English on and off at University. I loved the years as a volunteer teaching in Korea, after retirement. I am still involved in of volunteer work with ADRA in the field of applied linguistics, and migrants.

As a family we enjoyed:

Camping – Pathfinders taught them to cope in any situation & later overseas

Travel – In about 30 countries we saw how happiness was gained. It was fun

Music – An age champion organist; another, lead flautist in Qld champion high school band

Dreams – so many of those fun and work dreams, have come true. Its unbelievable

Studying – we have 28 university degrees, as well as many certificates & diplomas

Discussions – adult degrees and children’s topics were discussed around the table
Speech & Drama; eisteddfods, family, church & class parties

Space on our Brisbane hectare house block.

Opening our home to others – QUSDAS, university students, needy, lonely, great people.

Peace of mind

Our family all rejoice in the love of God. We have appreciated the SDA Church’s love, teachings, philosophies, values and opportunities over the years.

We really appreciate the time spent with QUSDAS and the positive approach to life.

My apologies for being unable to attend the reunion. I have lived in Canada since 1981. After moving here I completed my post graduate training in anesthesia. I currently practice in Cambridge, a city of about 130,000 and have been here 22 years.

My wife, Deborah, teaches nursing. We have 2 children, Laura age 17 and Elizabeth age 15. The children were orphaned in the early 90's during the civil war in the Central American country of Guatemala. We adopted them as babies. Please see a recent family photo taken during a visit to the Grand Canyon.

I've tried to scan some photos to include with the QUSDAS blog, or be available at the reunion, or whatever. The most recent family photos are from my brother David's recent weddings (yes, he got married twice, once in Egypt in June 2008 and the second time in Australia in August 2008). I've included ones that show my mum, Beryl Evans, my sisters Susan Norton and Annette Evans, my daughters Jane and Anna Forsythe, my brother David and his wife Taghreed, and my "significant other" Dick Roe. The only old photos I could find today were black and white ones of me with Ruth Landa, Gary and Wayne Martin at Bribie Island in 1968. I'll look for some more, but I'll see if you get these first.

Title: A Historical Sociology of Adventism

Subtitle: The evolution of Adventism in the 20^th Century through sociological eyes with, perhaps, a peak into the future.

In 1984 I set out to research the evolution of international Adventism by studying its contemporary situation and tensions and thereby predicting its trajectory as a sociological phenomenon. My research has taken me to 59 countries, where I have had in-depth interviews with some 3,500 individuals i.e. church administrators, academics, pastors, hospital workers, laypersons and malcontents plus focus groups of students at Adventist and non-Adventist tertiary institutions. This work has been distilled into 24 published papers and presented to professional meetings as well as to groups in forum at Adventist universities. I have found this research has enlightened me about who I am and where I came from.

Adventism in Australia in the 1950 and 60’s, as elsewhere, was conservative and practised largely by people who were uneducated at a tertiary level. In that era tensions occurred mainly between the orthodox and a few independently-minded conservatives who were studying at Avondale.

The Australian Commonwealth Scholarship program meant that many more students with an Adventist heritage could be exposed to secular tertiary study. It was the 1960s and we were the questioning generation. This was potentially intimidating to less educated church lay leaders and pastors and their first response was to close down on any dissent or separatism. An alternative strategy to support and encourage emerging groups such as QUSDAS was then begun in order to embrace individuals and their talents. These societies fulfilled a social and mental as well as a spiritual need. They were intended to be a nursery for fostering long term relationships (including marriage) that would further the work of the church. To some extent these things were occurring also in the US but it was occurring first in Australia.

The second generation of QUSDAS members seemed to be as different from the first generation as were 1970’s students in the US different from those of the decade before. These QUSDAS members were concerned more with affirmation of Adventism and Christianity and discussions of outreach on campus. I am interested to know where these people are in their life’s path today.

On September 1, 1971 I arrived in New York City to do post-doctoral study at Columbia University. I sought the social support of the church and was soon directed to an Adventist group of students meeting within the University. This has been my congregation ever since. I was elected its president in 1974, and have been re-elected every year since then.

Title: Just What You Wanted

Subtitle: An Outlook to Aid Consistent Thinking from the Abstract to the Concrete

From 1993 to 2001 I wrote a thesis that produced a meta framework which any academic discipline could use to describe its core operations or practice. The prevailing approach in industry, government and some quarters of university education at the time, and this has continued solidly over the last decade and half, is that professionals should be assessed and be accountable on the basis of how they perform not just what they know.

Philosophically, the central focus on the performance of practice and its output as compared with input has been influenced by the assumption proposed by Gilbert Ryle that all knowledge is capable of disclosure in behaviour. Assessment of performance or competence by professional and/or registering bodies is now offered as an alternative form of assessment for professionals moving between countries, by such professions as Accounting, Engineering, Architecture, Nursing, Veterinary Science. Various writers in social work have, in the manner of Ryle, identified the connection between the abstract thinking and operational stages of practice when addressing the development of descriptions of performance.

Expanding on this, if a profession is describing itself the description will be influenced by its view of the world as a whole and its role and place in the world. Becoming aware of our self interest as professionals, and individually, collectively and politically understanding sociology and the paradigms under which we function, is vital. An honest professional will analyse how their personal ideology (related to their personal position in society) might have influenced their thinking about their place in the world as a professional.

Such ideology most probably will, need to be reviewed in the light of evidence, self reflection and development of maturity of thinking about the world. I propose such a framework to you my colleagues of many years ago who grappled, rightly so, with theology, philosophy and how or how not to apply our personal values within our professions and career choices. I offer this as a way forward that can provide the professions real potency and power for good.

Title :Away with the Fairies

Twenty years ago I turned my research focus to aquatic life in the dry Outback. It changed my life to one of hairy adventures, new friends with iconic characters, and discovery of many new fairy, clam and shield shrimps. Additionally I continued my earlier focus on saline lakes, but all over Australia, including the Lake Buchanan basin in northeast Queensland, the Paroo in northwest New South Wales, Eyre Peninsula and Gawler Ranges in South Australia and the remote inland of Western Australia. I will present a window on a beautiful world as seen by a field biologist and report on the thrill of discoveries.

Title: A Personal Integration of God in Psychiatric Treatment

Subtitle: Anonymous as a Paradigm

In mental health and addiction treatment there is intense focus on the brain, neural pathways and neurotransmitters and the role they play in how we think, feel and behave. At the same time, there is also an increasing interest in the role of religion and spirituality in behavioral health and medical care. e are exploring the integration of these two trends in a new discipline, neurotheology, that argues that the structure and function of the human brain predispose us to believe in God.

It behooves clinicians to have some conceptual framework about where God fits into psychiatric and addiction treatment. To leave God out of our theory and practice may well be akin to leaving patients’ parents out of our theory and practice. The introduction of God into psychiatric and addiction treatment however, involves the same sensitivity, evaluative and timing skills that accompany the subject of parents in therapy. Just as therapists respect the complexity of feelings, attitudes and individual meaning of parental representations, the same sensitivity is needed concerning God.

In this presentation we provide a perspective on how God might be integrated into psychiatric care based on our clinical experience working in addiction treatment programs.

Title: Evolution of a skeptic

Childhood gullibility is essential for survival. Overcoming it is essential for progress. After lessons in personal fallibility, children discover sooner or later that their mentors too are fallible. I had my first lessons in that at eleven when the twin evils of envy and gossip blew apart our very religious extended farming family.

Six years later, it took only a few lessons on fulfilled prophecy to convince me that both the bible and ‘Spirit of Prophecy’ were truly inspired. I was later amazed to discover that our Adventist understanding of the gospel was identical to that of the alleged antichrist of Revelation, and that Ellen White herself had failed to grasp the core message of the Reformation. Mixing in the wider Christian community then forced me to question sabbatarianism, 1844 and other fundamentals of the faith. Walter Rea’s ‘White Lies’ finally challenged me to question all inspiration. After many years of critical study of the bible and numerous books on archeology, mythology, ancient and church history, the Dead Sea scrolls, non-canonical gospels and the historical Jesus, I now have a far more mature understanding of the bible and the convenient relationship between history and prophecy.

I also discovered some disturbing things about the media, forensic science and law during the 1980’s. Through a patient with NT police connections, I was one of the first to be privy to damning forensic evidence against Lindy Chamberlain, and I naively believed it. Challenged by my sister and others to look deeper, I took the trouble to contact important eyewitnesses after the trial, and what they told me shocked and disillusioned me. I then spent the next four years researching the case and fighting for justice. After the Morling Inquiry cleared Lindy, I turned my attention to other likely miscarriages of justice. Sandy McLeod-Lindsay was convicted on evidence from the same NSW forensic lab that found copper dust to be foetal blood, and had spent nine years in jail. I did some original blood spatter work and had his case reopened. A certain world authority was going to come and support me, but Legal Aid couldn’t afford his fee. What happened next destroyed any remaining faith I had in such ‘authorities’.

A month before starting university, I switched from electrical engineering to medicine after converting to Adventism through a family with a keen interest in herbs, homeopathy and ‘natural’ healing. So I included these complimentary modalities in my practice, and also developed a very successful Total Health program based on ‘natural laws’. I also read Carson’s ‘Silent Spring’ and Ehrlich’s ‘Population Bomb’ and became a keen environmentalist. As I questioned my spiritual roots, however, I began to also question the ‘science’ behind my philosophical paradigms. And I progressively discarded beliefs and practices that failed to stand up to good evidence.

I am now a convert to evidence-based medicine and skepticism. I am even more skeptical than Dawkins. I am too skeptical to be an atheist! And I am very skeptical of the belief that man is the primary cause of climate change. The Green movement now sweeping the world has all the religious hallmarks of the crisis cults I have escaped from. Perhaps every generation needs to learn their lessons in skepticism the same hard way.

Title: Climate Code Red – A Book Review

I have just returned from a book launch at parliament house in Melbourne. The Victorian governor, a professor of medicine with obvious personal conviction, launched "Climate Code Red" by policy analysts David Spratt and Philip Sutton. It is a meticulous analysis of the science of climate change unfettered by political, social or economic constraints. They make the case that it is a state of global emergency. I believe it's a story we all need to know.

:Title: Living Life in the Third Dimension

I attribute my ongoing recovery from a severe brain injury in December 1995 primarily to my Christian Spirituality which had its seedbed in my Wilsons Creek days. This was a farm where I grew up in a valley behind Mullumbimby in Northern New South Wales.

This has brought healing, restoration and transformation of life purpose. A Christian spirituality comes as a consequence of having a Christian Worldview. It isn’t another Spirituality in the Postmodern Culture of many spiritualities which are seen to be all equal.

It is a unique Spirituality which integrates the whole of life ... of the Inner, Middle and Outer Persons {Spirit, Soul (= mind, will and emotions), and Body}. It means being a disciple of the Person of Jesus Christ, not a follower of a Church as a corporation. A Christian spirituality could also be termed a `Spirituality from Jesus Christ’.

I was brought up in Adventism from the age of five. I attended Red Hill Church in Brisbane and hung out with Nonie. I attended the Gap High School with Nonie and Geoff Catton and his older brother Rodney. I then went to Kelvin Grove Teachers College after school and the University of Qld. at night.

I taught primary school at the Gap and at Capalaba. I then completed a Diploma of Psychology and became a guidance officer in primary schools.

I married at 24 years old and moved away from the Church. I became unmarried at 26. I moved to Sydney to a great job at Sydney’s blue Light Clinic for venereal disease. I then moved to Forum Magazine as the consultant editor and educator on issues relating to sex. I noted a new medical school getting established in Newcastle, applied and was accepted in 1980. I was 30 by then, and was back to being a student again.

I have worked in general practice since this time. I treat a lot of people for anxiety and depression. I also treasure our beautiful planet and work in wildlife rehabilitation. My main focus these days is working towards solutions for adaptation to the crisis of global warming which is going to be dramatically changing the way we live our lives in the years ahead.

My mother died, aged 100 in 2006 and I now live in the family home with my husband Doug. We married in 2007.

I married the lovely Lois Taylor in December 1967, and we took our newborn son to Invercargill a year later for my 5^th year work experience at Kew hospital. After my internship at Maryborough, and locum work in my home town of Gympie, I established a busy general practice near our home and hobby farm at Many West.

After further studies in exercise physiology at UQ in 1974, and six weeks in the USA in 1976, attending Loma Linda and Berkley and visiting the doyen of stress testing, Robert Bruce, I developed a comprehensive health assessment and prevention program (Total Health). For the next five years I conducted programs for the general public, for clergy, teachers, executives, government departments and the Family Medicine Program around Australia.

Then, after Lindy Chamberlain’s conviction in 1982, I spent the best part of four years campaigning for justice, organising public forums, rallies and fund-raising dinners, printing fact-and-fallacy pamphlets, coordinating Queensland supporters, doing media interviews and lobbying politicians. I was a member of the Chamberlain Innocence Committee (including former justices Sir Reginald Scholl and Frank Gallagher, and artists, Pro Hart and Guy Boyd) that presented new forensic evidence which helped to reopen the case.

Other miscarriages of justice were then brought to my attention. In the early 1990’s, I found myself doing some novel blood spatter work that reopened the case of Alexander McLeod-Lindsay, wrongfully convicted in 1966 on evidence from the same NSW forensic lab that had bungled the Chamberlain case. Like Lindy, he was later exonerated by Justice Trevor Morling.

After dabbling in alternative medicine for many years, I became a convert to evidence based medicine, and an educator and examiner for the college. In 1997, I helped to establish a large multi-disciplinary clinic at Many West and, in 1998, obtained a post-grad diploma in physical medicine from the University of Sydney.
After many years questioning my faith, I spent the last few years of the 20^th century re-evaluating the bible, its contradictions and anachronisms, and how it came to be written and compiled. I read many books on the subject, and on archeology, mythology, ancient and church history, evolution and astronomy. This exercise expunged the last traces of my fundamentalism. In recent years, my research and skepticism has turned to the new green religion with its apocalyptic climate change alarmism.

In 2001, Lois and I joined the sea change and moved to a quieter pace of life on the Tweed Coast to be closer to several of our four children, and five of our seven grandchildren. Every couple of years, we spend time in Poland with our second son, his Polish wife and two children. Steve, seven times world champion windsurfer and far better know in Poland than Australia, still competes on the lucrative European circuit and ‘Dances with the Stars’ in Poland. When not renovating his house, in which we live, I work part-time for a small Coolangatta practice and as a director for the Tweed Division of General Practice.

Life, learning and growing in understanding, often through conflict, is always a challenge and mostly a lot of fun.

· 1998-2005 : VOLUNTARY PRISON DOCTOR focusing on Counseling in Rape, Drugs and Alcohol Problems, Self-harm and Suicide Prevention, Sexuality and Relationships.

· Dr. Rosevear assisted the AMA develop the National Policy Statement on Prison Health Standards. He is active in Prison Reform.

COMMUNITY GROUPS:

· 1991-ongoing: Founder of GLADS- Gay & Lesbian Alcohol & Drug Support Group.

· 1992: Founder of Gay & Lesbian Alcoholics Anonymous in Brisbane.

· 1993-ongoing: Founder of MARS- Men Affected by Rape & Sexual-abuse. A support group used by 386 men out of 1,028 sexually abused men that Dr. Rosevear has helped since 1992.

· 1994-96: GAYABLE – a support group for Gays and Lesbians with disability.

Dr. Rosevear is active in addressing how our community relates to individuals who use drugs and alcohol and advocates nationally for understanding and drug law reform.

He lobbies for suicide prevention and against discrimination at all levels.

He works with male and female victims and male and female perpetrators of sexual abuse. He’s cared for 114 perpetrators in assisting their recovery from being abusive.

TRAINING WORK:

· Trainer for Gay and Lesbian Welfare Telephone Counseling Course

· Guest Lecturer for Lifeline, Kids & Parents Help Line, University of Queensland Medical Course and Indigenous Health Course.

· Inservice Lecturer at many High Schools to help teachers understand relationships, adolescents, drugs, sex and behaviour.

· Medical student tutor.

· Trains doctors how to relate to drug dependent people for the Methadone training programme.

· Trainer throughout Queensland to help carers assist men who have been sexually abused. ………………..

Dear Max, Hi! I am looking forward to the reunion. Sandra has been in

touch re the Sat. am talk. For the Dinner at my home on the Tuesday,

26th August, 08. Anyone is welcome. I will cook and provide the food.

Some indication of numbers would help. I thought 7 pm would be a good

time. If people want to swim, spa or sauna, they may like to bring

togs. There is the option of watching a movie as well and I have some,

but people are welcome to bring DVDs. There is plenty of space inside

and out that people can chat or move about so it usually is quite

relaxed and social. The address is 15 The Esplanade, St. Lucia. ( Ph.

Uni. looking on to the river. People can park down the Esplanade or

around the back in the St. Lucia Shopping Village. Looking forward to
